Q. Do all companies manage their own equipment in a data center?
A. No. The management of IT and data center facilities are often outsourced to third party companies that specialize in the monitoring, maintenance and remediation of systems and facilities on a shared services basis.

Recent changes to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure put IT on the front lines for ensuring a business is complying with regulations, notably Sarbanes-Oxley and HIPAA. Not only is it necessary to store key data for longer periods, but being able to retrieve information at a granular level - right down to specific emails - is now an IT responsibility, so a data center that is not handled properly could result in a trip before a judge.

Raise the temperature of the data center to around 24 degrees Celsius, while ensuring that all equipment is certified at the new temperature. This will reduce the level of cooling required and, thus, the energy bill.

Five issues IT managers must consider to ensure smooth data center operations are as follows: Regulatory compliance, disaster recovery/business continuance, power, Hosted Solutionscooling, and IT as a service will be dominant themes in the coming year as companies work to manage their IT assets to support business goals.

Storage virtualization is the pooling of physical storage from multiple network storage devices into what appears to be a single storage device that is managed from a central console. Storage virtualization is commonly used in storage area networks (SANs).

Virtualization was first introduced in the 1960s by IBM to boost utilization of large, expensive mainframe systems by partitioning them into logical, separate virtual machines that could run multiple applications and processes at the same time. In the 1980s and 1990s, this centrally shared mainframe model gave way to a distributed, client-server computing model, in which many low-cost x86 servers and desktops independently run specific applications.

The cost of restoring the lost information or restoring a computer to operation after a hardware or software failure is high due to the costs of technical support and lost employee productivity.

New computing resources can be deployed in a just-in-time approach. Traditional physical and virtual workloads can be easily migrated between servers through remote management, regardless of physical connectivity. The Cisco Unified Computing System improves availability, security, agility, and performance through an integrated architecture.

The Green IT approach can include several different phases in the lifecycle of a product – the development, production, usage and disposal of IT. Development must grant consideration to the environment; the production must take place using environmentally friendly production methods; the IT solutions must be used in an environmentally friendly manner; and finally, IT waste must be disposed of in an environmentally correct manner. All of these phases are supported by research and innovation in Green IT.

High availability data systems optimize the reliability of data storage systems by providing redundancy only of critical components to eliminate single points of failure. A single point of failure occurs when the failure of a single component of a system causes the entire system to cease operating, resulting in the potential loss of data. Therefore, one goal in designing a high availability data storage system is to provide a satisfactory level of reliability while keeping the cost of the system in check.

The Cisco Nexus 1000V allows policy to move with a virtual machine during live migration ensuring persistent network, security, and storage compliance resulting in improved business continuance, performance management, and security compliance.
